Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography (SWE) is an evolving, non-invasive and relatively inexpensive technology used to quantify stiffness, or shear modulus, of soft tissue by estimating the propagation speed of ultrasound-induced shear-waves (Kuo et al., 2013).

SWE uses an acoustic radiation force pulse sequence to generate shear waves, which propagate perpendicular to the ultrasound beam, causing transient displacements. The distribution of shear-wave velocities at each pixel is directly related to the shear modulus, an absolute measure of the tissue’s elastic properties.

Shear-wave elastography (SWE) uses measurement of acoustically generated tissue shear wave propagation speeds to derive estimates of liver stiffness, with the advantage of simultaneous anatomic B-mode US imaging . This allows selection of a liver parenchymal region of interest devoid of blood vessels or focal lesions for analysis. Shear waves are generated inside the human body by means of an ultrasonic burst (left). Depending on tissue stiffness, shear waves travel at varying speed, but generally very slowly through the human body. Their propagation can be followed and visualized using … Induced displacement at the focus creates a shear wave that provides information about the local viscoelastic properties of the tissue, thus allowing quantitation of elastic values. This new technique is less dependent on the examiners than strain elastography, and has also demonstrated higher diagnostic performance in differentiating thyroid nodules. Shear Wave Elastography with Ultrasound. Ultrasound technology is well suited for implementing Shear Wave elastography. First, ultrasound can be used to generate Shear Waves in tissue. As sound waves propagate, a portion of their energy is transferred to the surrounding medium by absorption or reflection, as shown in . Figure 2.

Press Release Samsung Showcases Advanced Ultrasound Solutions at EUROSON 2018 to Address Evolving Healthcare Demands September 6, 2018. Shear wave ultrasound elastography allows shear wave speed, which is related to stiffness, to be measured in vivo in individual muscles. Previous studies on ETE have mostly used morphological approaches with ultrasound. However, to our knowledge, none of the previous studies have evaluated the ability of elasticity parameters of shear-wave elastography (SWE) to predict ETE in patients with thyroid cancer.

Shear wave elastography relies on the generation of shear waves determined by the displacement of tissues induced by the force of a focused ultrasound beam or by an external push. Eighteen short-axis shear wave speed measurements were acquired from each specimen: 3 from the 9-, 12-, and 3-o’clock locations for each method.

The concept is similar to strain elastography, but instead of using transducer pressure to compare a shift in an ultrasound A-line (thereby measuring changes in strain), a higher intensity pulse is transmitted to produce shear waves, which extend In contrast to strain elastography, shear-wave elastography uses an acoustic radiation force impulse created by a focused ultrasound beam, which allows measurement of the propagation speed of shear waves within the tissue to locally quantify its stiffness in kilopascals or meters per second. 2021-02-01 SWE uses an acoustic radiation force pulse sequence to generate shear waves, which propagate perpendicular to the ultrasound beam, causing transient displacements.
